From Vice-Chancellor’s Desk

I am extremely happy to present the second issue of YCMOU Bulletin to its readers. Just like parents are anxious about their infant till it’s on its own, such has been the case with us, the editorial board of YCMOU Bulletin. The response and feedback that we have received on the first issue of YCMOU Bulletin has further encouraged us and motivated us to bring this second issue to you. On the basis of this we can say that the readers have welcomed the YCMOU Bulletin. In the next issue onwards we are adding a new feature on feedback by the dignitaries.

This second issue of YCMOU Bulletin is a special issue on the 16th Convocation Ceremony in the decennial anniversary of the university. This convocation was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm and response on the backdrop of the glorious history of the past two decades. On the day of the convocation ceremony, the campus was bustling with students, parents and their friends. The joy of being awarded a higher degree was visible on the faces of new graduates.

The university has deep concern for the transformation of society. In this endeavor the university offers its educational courses in various prisons of Maharashtra. Forty jail inmates including five women from these prisons study centres who earned their degrees were awarded their degrees in this convocation. The university is happy to see this thirst for knowledge in them. I am happy to inform you that Ms. Sandhya Jadhav one of these jail inmates has been offered a job by the university and given her a new life.

Maharashtra has recently seen Pardhi community being attacked now and then. This community in which less than one percent are educated, has been labeled as a criminal community. Ms. Rekha Pawar a student of the university from this community has been placed in the Amravati Regional Center of the university and has empowered herself and her family to bring herself into the mainstream.

Ms. Sunita Shinde from Barsi, whose husband sacrificed his life while combating with terrorists, was placed in Mamasaheb Jagdale College, Barshi one of the study centers of the university; and displayed it through action that the civil society is with her.

The university has been successful in achieving its target of securing five acres of government land for its ambitious project of establishing a district center in each district of the state. It has got unprecedented support from the government of Maharashtra. Almost 20 district collectors have given orders to the concerned authorities to allot the land in their respective districts. This attempt of the university has been nearing fruition at Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati and Beed.

On the academic front the university has signed a MoU with the prestigious Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants (IICA), established by the parliament, which conducts examinations for chartered accountants (CA). This institute will conduct a preparatory training course on CA examination for the students of B.Com/M.Com of the School of Commerce and Management of the university. We have also signed a MoU with the Cambridge University through Words Worth to offer a world-class course on Communicative Skills in English for the youth from both urban and rural areas. This course is scheduled to commence in June 2010. It has been offered at very cost effective prices, the rural students will be able to avail this course for just Rs. 2000/- whereas the urban students will gain it for Rs. 2110/-.

Similarly the university is also going to have MoUs with IIT Powai (Mumbai) and IIT Kanpur. In collaboration with NIIT the university is soon going to offer its B. Sc IT course to foreign students through e-learning mode.

In its decennial anniversary year the university has achieved spectacular growth in terms of development of physical infrastructure, qualitative educational programmes and sound economy. This wouldn’t have been possible without positive attitude and constructive support by the various bodies of the university - Board of Management, Academic Council, Planning Board, and Finance Committee. So, I feel I am short of words to thank all these bodies for their wholehearted support and goodwill in my tenure.

With the collective and positive efforts by the directors of various schools, teaching staff & faculties working on contract, non-teaching staff, ITI trainees and other support staff including daily wageworkers, the ambience of the university is now back to normal, which was burning with various issues before few days. The then disturbing environment has receded now. There is increase in accordance and cohesiveness in the general environment of the university. Now there is more academic atmosphere.

Everyone has started contributing with a renewed energy in the organization of International conferences, launching of new educational programmes, e-learning initiatives and many other students and society oriented programmes.

It is only through peaceful and genuinely educational ambience any university flourishes. I am sure YCMOU would not lag behind in its attempt to strive for social justice, while protecting its identity and national pride.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Vice-Chancellor, of this university Dr. R. Krishnakumar. I wish him all the best for his vision and endeavors.

Dr. Sudhir Gavhane
Vice-Chancellor
